1) Describe your music for those who aren’t familiar.

We play a mix of “Melodic” Hardcore and somewhat modern “Screamo”. I use both terms loosely because we’re never really quite sure what genre to put ourselves in. We kind of like it that way though, keeps people guessing. (We hope)

2) Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

We all come from such vast musical backgrounds. Each of us have had our share of experience in bands, none of them remotely close to what’s being played now, and none of them alike. Personally, Two Gallants and Killing The Dream influence me the most. There are a lot of Cormac McCarthy and Oscar Wilde rip offs in our lyrics as well. As for the rest of the guys, there’s Mike’s obsession with American Football and Randall’s constant search for the heaviest music ever written. Justin loves As Cities Burn, and none of us really know anything about Matt (steven); He wears a The Carrier windbreaker sometimes.

3) What are some of your favorite parts about the music scene that you come out of? What are some things that you wish you could change about the music scene?

Greenville/The Upstate of SC has a pretty dull music scene. Luckily there are a hand full of individuals with the passion and drive to fight against the always impending death of our scene. It has gotten better, and is probably currently the best it’s ever been (strictly speaking in terms of attendance at shows). Some of us in the band have recently teamed up with friends from the area and opened a new venue right outside of downtown, so hopefully we can build something that has a little bit of potential.

If I could change anything it would be the general attitude of how people see touring bands around here. I’d like to see more relaxation and less “idol-worship”. I get tired of seeing bands treat the people at their shows like “fans”, as opposed to how we view them: “friends”. Same thing goes for the kids at shows. Just because someone’s standing a few feet above you banging their head, doesn’t mean they’re any better than you, so calm down, and treat them like a normal sweaty guy/girl who just happens to be on the stage.

4) How did your band get started?

Strangely. The original line-up was almost completely different. Matt (bass) and I (vocals) are the only two members still in the position we started in. Justin (drums) used to play guitar, until the original drummer left. Then the other original guitarist left, so we asked Mike to join, and we were a four piece for a while. One day at our old practice space, Randall was just hanging out and picked up a guitar. So that was that.

We also played very different, much less original music for the first 6 months, until Justin quit chugging and Mike started making weird, spacey noise.

5) What are you most excited about for the future of your band?

We’ve always been the type of band to get immediately bored with whatever we just wrote, so, that being the case, we’re always writing new music. We’ve recorded (and kind of “released”) one demo and 2 e.p.’s. Currently we’re writing some new songs for what we hope will be on a 7″ sometime in the distant future. Touring is the one thing at this point that we really want/need to do, so we’ll probably be doing that this December, maybe sooner.

Mainly I’m just excited that it’s lasted this long, because we all like to bitch at each other constantly and are all so different.

6) If you could change one thing about the music industry what would it be?

The word “Industry”. Maybe just in hardcore though. I get that people will continue to make remixes of pop-songs and shit like that and continue to make millions. That doesn’t really bother me, because it’s expected, but I cringe at the fact that some bands start writing hardcore music to make money. First of all, it’s completely naive. Second, it’s just not how I see this type of music. I’ll never let the illusion that I could spend my entire life living off of what a band has given me, creep into my head. I’m not in this too succeed at anything other than letting out aggression, have fun with my best friends, and avoiding going completely insane.

7) Who are some of your favorite South Carolina or Regional bands to play with? What band do you think your fans should check out?

From SC, we love all of the guys from In Regret and Blacklines. They just put out a split on Downside Records (also from SC) and are both extremely hard working. Overlooked are from Wilmington/Myrtle Beach and are also an incredibly underrated band.

We are only a couple of hours from a few really great scenes, each of which have several awesome bands. Just Die! from Asheville, Fingers Crossed from Johnson City, and Advent from Kernersville all immediately come to mind.

If you like what you hear from us, you need to listen to Touche Amore, Pianos Become The Teeth, Comadre, La Dispute, and Killing The Dream. We all consider those bands to be incredibly influential to us as a whole.

We’ve toned down the amount of shows we’re playing to focus on writing new material, but the next show is in Columbia on Sep. 27th with Rotting out and Soul Search.

Remembering Never – Sunday, July 25 at The Legion.

For better or worse, South Carolina’s hardcore music scene isn’t what it used to be a handful of years ago. Many of the kids you used to see at shows all over SC have moved onto other things, and are generally disinterested in getting into new hardcore bands. They’ve got their favorite bands they got into in high school that they still jam relentlessly, and that’s enough for them. And there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s only on the rare occasion that the carriers of the old standard load into the van and head back out on tour that you see these kids out at hardcore shows. Well, thanks to the team of kids who brought shows back to Summerville, SC’s American Legion Post, that rare occasion is this Sunday, July 25. Dead Truth’s Remembering Never are rolling back into SC, and they’ve brought labelmates Hivemind, fellow Floridians My Amends, Forty Winters, and Battle!, supported on tour by SC’s hometown heroes In Regret and Blacklines, with them to put on one of the best shows the Legion has been home to in years.

It’s great to see that Remembering Never hasn’t thrown in the towel, and touring again as a band after two years on hiatus. They’ve got a new release planned for the coming months called “This Hell Is Home,” their first release since 2006’s “God Save Us.” Judging from a series of YouTube videos posted of their July 10 show at Pembroke Pines, FL’s Talent Farm, they’re still playing your old favorites from “God Save Us” in addition to some new tracks like “Time Eraser,” of which they’ve posted a demo on the their MySpace. Frontman “Mean” Pete Kowalsky never left the hardcore scene, and during Remembering Never’s hiatus, could be found fronting the band xBishopx and playing guitar in Dirty Habits.

Locals Blacklines and In Regret have recently gone through some lineup changes, but don’t let that make you think they’re any less passionate about what they’re doing. These guys just put out an amazing split 7”/CD on Downside Records available for download here and for purchase here and at the show on Sunday. These guys have been on tour since July 9th exporting SC hardcore to the rest of the country, and we couldn’t be happier with how they’re representing us.

So, to all the old school hardcore kids: lace up your Vans, dig out your camo cargo shorts, and see if any of your old black band shirts still fit, because it’s time to head back to 2006 for a night and show the new kids what a hardcore show is supposed to look like.

Here’s the lineup again for you guys:

Remembering Never

Battle!

Forty Winters

My Amends

Hivemind

Blacklines

In Regret

The Legion

105 Sumter Ave

Summerville, SC

$10 5 PM Doors

P.S. If you decide you miss it, and want to get back into the SC hardcore scene, the best place to start is schardcore.blogspot.com. You’ll get all the necessary info for upcoming shows throughout the state and exposed to a lot of great bands, new and old, through the downloads available there. Then hit the forums if you want to chat about it. See you at the shows!

THE CARRIER, ADVENT, Torch Runner, Blacklines, In Regret – Round Hill Community Club 2707 Two Notch Road, Lexington SC

The Carrier is on their Spring Break 10` tour with Advent. This tour will be appearing Sunday, March 14th with locals Torch Runner, Blacklines, and In Regret.

Torch Runner

For fans of Cursed, Colony, and Just Die! Torch Runner (Greensboro, North Carolina) is loud and chaotic.

Blacklines

For fans of Modern Life is War and Verse. This Charleston local band has been making a pretty heavy impact recently. With soon to be released split 7” with Columbia locals In Regret, we will see what is next to come for this South Carolina hardcore band.

In Regret

For fans of It Prevails, Shai Hulud, and This is Hell. These Columbia locals have really come into their own over the past few months. In Regret is a great band with a lot of potential, if you haven’t listened to them, take the time to check out to the songs on their myspace and you won’t regret it.

Advent

For fans of For Today, Life in Your Way, and Bury Your Dead. This Christian hardcore band has been a mainstay of heavy hardcore for the past few years. This band includes the previous drummer of Beloved but separates itself both lyrically and musically. Advent relishes in the intense breakdowns which were sprinkled through Beloved’s work. They are touring on their recent release Naked and Cold. Naked and Cold is heavy, energetic, and chocked full of breakdowns.

The Carrier

For Fans of Dead Hearts, Defeater, and Killing the Dream. The Carrier has a creative blend of intense vocals with slow and melodic rhythms permeating in their emotionally charged albums. Their use of repetitive rhythms and isolationist lyrics makes one lose their self in the music. While a little melodramatic, The Carrier puts on an intense show by pulling the crowd in and leaving everything on the stage. One aspect cherished about seeing this band is being able to relate to the melodramatic/depressing/isolationist lyrics and being sucked in by their enthralling presence and The Carrier promises to provide.

On March 6th the House of Hardcore brings Former Thieves with Into It. Over It. and Dire Wolf.

Dire Wolf is a hardcore band from Michigan. They sound a little like Converge, but more so like Integrity. They have that heavy doom sound with faster parts intertwined. They are coming off the release of their most recent EP-Gloom (self-released). You can find both their EPs (Gloom and self-titled) free on their myspace.

Into It. Over It. seems a little out of the place for this show, considering he is a singer/songwriter but don’t jump to conclusions, Into It. Over It. Is good stuff. Into It. Into It. Over It. Is a solo project of Evan Weiss (The Progress, It’s A King Thing, Up Up Down Down), and 52 weeks was born from his goal to write one song a week for 52 weeks starting on his 23rd birthday. Some of his vocals remind me of Minus the Bear without the technicalities but other times it is similar to Bright Eyes or Death Cab for Cutie.

http://intoitoverit.com/

Former Thieves – Control and Illusion (LIVE) from Tim Dodd on Vimeo.

Former Thieves is a heavy punk band from Iowa. This band is one of the more intense up and coming band. They blend a heavy technical sound with bursts of energy, reminiscent of Brain Worms, Pianos Become The Teeth, or Touche Amore. Former Thieves is touring on their 12” The Great and The Alleged Great (Mayfly Records). This 5 song LP is full of energy and dark lyrics, and one would expect their live performance to be complementary.
