Sunday, April 22

All Get Out will be going on a nationwide tour in late March with La Dispute, Sainthood Reps, and Balance & Composure. This tour will be coming through South Carolina Sunday, April 22 at New Brookland Tavern. Both All Get Out and La Dispute will be touring in support of new albums released late in 2011. All Get Out’s first full length release The Season came out in September, while La Dispute’s second full length Wildlife came out in October.

This tour sets to match All Get Out up with a different fan base than the band has experienced on past tours. The post hardcore following of fellow touring bands should match up well with All Get Out’s live show, that leans a lot heavier than The Spitting EP and The Season.

You know how it goes. Here we go again.

10. Justice – Audio, Video, Disco

Justice is back. Finally. And they’re a lot funkier. Newlands is my favorite on this one.

9. Lykke Li – Wounded Rhymes

I am in love with Lykke Li. She croons all over the place on this record, and she covered Rick Ross’s “Hustlin’” once. She gets an A in my book, as does this record. Also, check out the Beck remix of Get Some.

8. Tally Hall – Good & Evil

Tally Hall is a cutesy dorky indie pop band from Michigan. If you want some silly music to make ya smile a little bit, check this band out. I’ve liked them since my sophomore year in high school and had been waiting for their follow-up to their first album. Here it is.

7. Washed Out – Within and Without

Ernesto. Doing what he does. On Sub Pop. It’s more produced. I’d say it has a thicker sound. I’m a fan.

6. Mogwai – Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will.

MOGWAI IS LIKE REALLY REALLY DOPE AND SO IS THIS RECORD.

5. Drake – Take Care

As much as I make fun of Drake, I like this record. Even with the stupid hook to “Make Me Proud”, and the weird vocal inflections on the pre-chorus to “Underground Kings”, it’s this high up on my list. I’m going to give most of the credit to Drake’s producer, 40. If we could just remove the Birdman outro and the Lil’ Wayne hook on HYFR it might be better.

4. Childish Gambino – Camp

It’s no secret that I really like Childish Gambino/Donald Glover. I wanna see a music video to every song on this record. Speaking of music videos on this record, check out the “Bonfire” music video if you haven’t yet. The end of “That Power” is really well written and performed. I’m also a fan of the ‘suite’ of “All the Shine”/”Letter Home”. Suck it Pitchfork. Give Drake a Best New Music and not even give Childish Gambino a 2.0?

Alright.

3. Manchester Orchestra – Simple Math

It’s not as bold as Mean Everything to Nothing. It’s a little overproduced. But everyone knows I’m a sucker for some strings. Yes. There is an orchestra on a Manchester Orchestra record. Am I the only one who found that funny? Anyway, I love it. I know there were some naysayers, but I love it. I want the next record to be more raw, but I def can still listen to this record from front to back at least once a week.

2. Jay-Z and Kanye West – Watch the Throne

DUH. OF COURSE THIS WOULD BE ON MY LIST. KANYESUS AND HOVA. Apparently there’s going to be a Watch the Throne 2. UHOH. Also, Drake and Lil’ Wayne said they couldn’t release a collab record because everyone would compare it to Watch the Throne. Please. They can’t hold a candle to Jay and Ye.

1. Toro y Moi – Underneath the Pine

Yup. I did it. Disagree? This record is awesome. Just listen to it (if you haven’t already).

Also Notable:

Patrick Stump – Soul Punk

Panda Bear – Tomboy

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. – It’s a Corporate World

Balkans – Balkans

LOCAL RELEASES!

10. Modern Man – Walk Away

First saw Modern Man at El Burrito for a WUSC show. They blew my mind. Check this band out.

9. Risky Business – Walt Risky

Taylor’s best release so far. Risky won the USC Battle of the Bands this year and opened for Sequoyah at Homecoming. Can you imagine being Sequoyah Technical Institute drunk while being Risky Business drunk? Apparently he broke contract and started cursing as soon as the show started. That’s my boy.

8. Baby Baby – Money

Met these guys back in March. Awesome. Atlanta. A little far out for local, but give me a break. They’re awesome. When asked about their genre, I call them Party Rock. And then the damn LMFAO song came out. So now I don’t know what to call them. The last song on this record is money…ha.

7. Marshall Brown – The Blue Shades EP

Marshall lives behind me. He writes good ass tunes. He has an amazing voice. If you haven’t heard his music or seen him live, you’re messing up.

6. Say Brother – All I Got Is Time

I saw Tripp at Earth Fare yesterday. He told me his Christmas consisted of naps and tequila shots every time he woke up from one. He’s a champion. This band is really damn amazing. I have an instant great mood every time I see them play. Another must see live in Soda City.

5. Toro y Moi – Freaking Out

Y so freak out Chaz? Lovin the dancy disco feel. Feels like some tastes of old Toro. I can play this EP over and over and over. Took me forever to get past the first two tracks, because I’d just keep playing them over and over again.

4. Clever Words – Nothing Ever Stays the Same, But People Never Change

Clever Words really stepped it up. This EP is leaps and bounds from where this band was last year. Dudes are kickin it up a notch. “Christy Said It Was Raining” is legitimately my favorite local song of the year.

3. Rejectioneers – 25 EP

BEN WALKER BEN WALKER BEN WALKER! So stoked for a full-length after this EP. It’s killer. Ben’s sexy voice just drips all over these tracks. Hear the magic.

2. Coma Cinema – Blue Suicide

Mickey dropped a fresh one on us. This record is a really really good listen. It just has great continuity. I don’t know how to write. It flows real good, y’all. Also check out that Elvis Depressedly stuff. You will not be sorry.

1. All Get Out – The Season

Finally. Also, I say it was worth the wait. The first time I heard this record straight through, my eyes kept widening more and more and more. The transition between “Let Me Go” and “Come and Gone” is one of the best transitions I have ever heard in recorded music. The production is amazing. The use of strings on this record is beautiful. But it’s loud. And that’s the main thing I wanted from this record. I got it. I’m happy. Write me another one.

Also Notable:

Ramphastos – Full Moon

Madi Diaz – Far From Things That We Know EP

The Sea Wolf Mutiny – The Last Season

Thoughts on 2011:

We already posted some of our thoughts on 2011 here: But here are some memories we have as a band over the past year:

All Get Out - The Season: we were blown away by the badassness of this album. Always cool to see local bands get even wider exposure and put out such a thoroughly well-done album. If you’ve be in Columbia at all, you’ve anticipated this release, and I’m excited for them to have it done and out for people to fall in love with.

Playing with the Rocketboys: Was awesome to play with these guys. Awesome musicians and incredible music. Their most recent EP “Wellwisher” is one of the best four song releases we’ve heard in a while.

Sea Wolf Mutiny: Love the exposure these guys are getting and their incredibly unique sound. Plus their commitment to playing out a lot. If you live in Columbia and haven’t been able to see these guys live, it’s most definitely your fault.

Junior Astronomers: Their EP didn’t come out in 2011 I’m pretty sure. But getting to see those guys play show after show after show, and then getting picked up by Fav Gentlemen community is pretty awesome for those guys, and is a win for local music. Our favorite memories of 2012 will most definitely include their full-length.

Our release show in August was one of the most memorable times we’ve had as a band. Being able to share the stage with The Sea wolf mutiny and the Rejectioneers was absolutely incredible. Being able to play in front of 200 or so people of different tastes was a blast. Having all three bands releasing music on that night, all the artwork and seeing the response of support at the door was really encouraging. Seeing Ben, Kenny, Christian, Chris and Biscuit making music in Columbia again is pretty awesome as well.

It’s the end of the year and everyone is cuddled up by their fireplace and reminiscing on the top albums of 2011. I’ve browsed a couple of top 50 lists so far and they are pretty good. The state of music in general is really good these days even though you hear people bitch about it all the time. But when you have people like Justin Townes Earle, Dawes, and Gillian Welch putting out amazing albums it seems silly to complain.

Reflecting back on this summer I don’t think I’ve ever been more bummed out with the state of music in South Carolina. But once August rolled around things started to change. Hopscotch festival in Raleigh was truly an eye opening experience for me. I was there, with thousands of people, hopping from venue to venue seeing these hip bands that people were freaking out about. And I want to say this as non biased as possible, South Carolina bands are equal if not better than almost every band from North Carolina that I saw there. We don’t have this elite hip buzz around us like they do, but we hold our on. What we’re really missing are the more regional/national bands that they have. But if it makes you feel any better, when those mid level cool North Carolina bands come here, they don’t exactly draw big crowds. Just like our BBQ is more palatable, maybe South Carolinian’s music tastes lean towards the more palatable. More along the lines of the WNCW crowd than the triangle crowd. One part of North Carolina that South Carolina has adopted are the Charlotte area bands that do well all over our state. I’ve always been under the impression that it’s a “we’re all in this together” sort of deal, but I don’t exactly get that vibe from certain cities in North Carolina. Hopefully that impression is off and is something that will change over time.

Enough rambling about our top bunk neighbors. We have some great music here in South Carolina and a couple of bands that are going to really take off in 2012. Sometimes these bands take off right under your nose. Kind of like Cary Ann Hearst and Shovels and Rope touring non stop all over the country and recording an amazing Daytrotter session and being on NPR. Or Slowrunner touring the US with William Fitzsimmons and then heading over to Europe for a two month tour in support of their newest album “Damage Points.” Mike Mewborne’s new album The Perseids is absolutely beautiful and hopefully won’t be overlooked by anyone.

One album that is really great is Run Dan Run’s new album Normal. I’ve been scared it was going to get overlooked and was relieved and excited to find out that they had signed to the mighty Team Clermont based out of Athens. It’s a good feeling to know that album will get the attention it deserves.

The Sea Wolf Mutiny and Elonzo put out amazing albums and have more in the works. Wylie out of Charleston spent an entire year focusing on their music and recording a new album that they will unveil in early 2012. They are trying to get label support so that album get’s the nurturing it needs. As a fan and a lover of good music it’s hard to see a band like All Get Out release a record and it kind of just sit. It was released, and had positive reviews, and was what everyone has been waiting on, but it hasn’t been followed by solid tour dates. That album deserves so much more support than it’s being given and it’s sometimes hard to watch and wonder who’s in charge of making that happen. It’s still new though and we have high hopes all of that will change and it will take off soon enough. Making an album is kind of like having a child. Once you have the baby you don’t just stare at it and say “walk.”

Being the website that we are, we’re always looking for the best ways to support South Carolina music. It’s not always actually on SceneSC where that happens. A lot is on the back end. Suggesting bands for shows. Helping with a ticket giveaway every now and then. Going to shows. Talking to people. A lot of it is confined to our social networks. By saying “being the website that we are” I’m referring to the fact that we are a very small staff, with limited time and full time jobs. But we’re constantly trying to find ways to be better, because all of those bands I mentioned are great bands making great music and people everywhere need to know about them.

It feels good to just write to you. I haven’t done it in a long time. The truth is SceneSC needs your support. We need your support so we can support others. We need your support so we can all support each other.

For the longest time Daytrotter seemed like a dream. Thousands of songs to download, beautiful stripped down raw versions from our favorite bands, and somehow they were all free. Recently Daytrotter was straightforward with their fans and changed over to a pay model. What was the rate going to be? Would they price themselves out? They simply asked for $2 a month for unlimited downloads and offered new features like live concert footage and the ability to stream bands recording session for another small fee. Seriously, only $2 a month? I still felt like I was getting a steal and would have been happy to pay even more. They made clear that artists were getting royalties from their sessions and that if you purchased the live sessions then that money would be split with the artists. Just another reason the $2 shouldn’t bother you.

What Daytrotter has created is a tight knit music community. They don’t record much crap, and they show the raw talent of bands. All Get Out now has it under control, this is their third visit and first since their debut album has been released.

All Get Out’s debut full length The Season has been years in the making. To fans, it has been a myth, a rumor and something that has been much anticipated. The band went from playing hundreds of shows in 2008, 2009, and 2010 to regional one off dates for much of 2011. They had started to become a staple at SXSW, but in 2011 were absent. They rode hard their first, much beloved Spitting EP, and then re-released it as self titled on Favorite Gentlemen Records. Self titled records are saved for when a band finds its true sound. Had All Get Out found it’s true sound before it ever released a full length?

There are more questions surrounding this record than there are visible answers. Recorded in the heart of Winter in early 2010, the album features some songs that were fresh at the time and others that had become familiar fan favorites over the years.

The Season opens up with the pedal to the floor with “My Friends.” A song that All Get Out has opened up with at live shows consistently over the years. Only 10 seconds into the album we have our first “Wooh”, and you think you are in for a fast ride. What you don’t expect are the horns and organ that seemingly come out of nowhere to the forefront from a band that is better known for loud guitars and grungy distortion. Years ago we labeled them as “Southern Grunge” based more on their live performance, but this album takes All Get Out to a new more polished sound.

Songs like “Lucky Bastard” and “The Season” are sure fan pleasers, but take a backseat to three songs. “Son of Mine”, “Let Me Go” and “Come and Gone” are a three part personal story that have been in waiting for Nathan Hussey’s first full length for years. Performed live, “Let Me Go” brings crowded rooms to an eery silence. Those chills have finally been captured masterfully on record, something that wasn’t easy to do.

The Season is proof of versatility. A band known for leaving a trail of spit, broken guitars, and cymbals in its’ wake have made a beautiful record. The Smashing Pumpkinsesque “Tonight, Tonight” outro to “Come and Gone” is not only a precious gift from Kopecky Family Band, but a soft fade to an album that opened with aggression and is sprinkled with angst.

Is the “back 9″ finally here? Only time will tell, but now you have the tools to make it happen.

All Get Out will release their record this Saturday, September 24 at New Brookland Tavern.

Anyways, they filmed All Get Out playing two songs for their Acoustic Alley video series. The new All Get Out album is all ready to go and will be coming out this fall. If it doesn’t come out this fall then riots will ensue and the album will surely leak.

Frequent The Blue Indian. It’s a great website.

We had quite an adventurous weekend music wise with All Get Out, Manchester Orchestra, O’Brother and The Love Language in town.

3 times I was mistaken for Andy Hull. One free drink.

1 time we were kicked out of the green room. (Whoops)

1st time I’ve been back to Art Bar since that whole Art Bar/Scene SC thing. Truth is, I’ve forgotten all about it and other people remember better than I do.

I got to the show early Friday so I could hang out with the guys in O’Brother and All Get Out while they were in town. Before we started this website we were seeing both of these bands every chance we got, and at a couple of those shows there were not many people there. It’s kind of the same story for Manchester Orchestra who went from playing The Boiler Room to The Watershed to New Brookland Tavern to now playing for 2,500 + people in the Jillian’s parking lot. 93.5 and the mainstream rock listeners really came out and supported this show.

We have an interview with Manchester Orchestra posting tomorrow with high quality pictures from the show. It’s a more in depth look at the process of writing their last album and how they’ve grown through venues in their relationship with Columbia. All of the guys in Manchester were really nice and respectful to us when we met them. It’s not easy to be that way when a random dude that looks vaguely like your bands singer asks you your spirit animal.

Spirit Animals

Ben Walker-Native American

Aaron Wamack-Wolves

Anton Dang-Bear

Michael Martens-Albatross

Chris Freeman-(We forgot to tweet his. I swear it was something and an Eagle. Like a Wolf Eagle.)

Saturday night I flew solo and went to see The Love Language at Art Bar. When I was walking up I expected to see closer to a sold out crowd, but it was kind of thin at first. Ended up being a pretty good crowd, but not the packed house I would expect for a top notch Merge Records band in Columbia. I think that had to do with it being 21+. I know you could have added 50+ people bringing in the college crowd. I know Rupert was disappointed that he couldn’t get in the show. Saturday was like having the old crowd back at Art Bar. Even though I went by myself, it seemed to be the central gathering spot of friends in Columbia.

Anyways, The Unawares and Say Brother put on an amazing show as always. They split the stages and used both rooms at Art Bar like they do at Music Crawl. I like it. I think that’s the best way to do it even though I know it probably sucks for the sound person.

The Love Language slayed as everyone knew they would. When they started out there were seriously 10 people in front of the stage and then people filled in through the first and second songs to pack the room. Their infectious pop won over a room decorated for what seems their style of music. Retro, robots, Christmas lights, a wall of televisions and a drunk dancing mid 20′s crowd.

Sunday-David slept.

We’re starting to podcast again this week. Get excited.

PS. Thanks to the dudes in O’Brother, Chris @ Big Hassle for helping us out and everyone that took care of this weekend.

The Crawfish festival is one of our favorite outdoor concert festivals in Columbia every year. They always tug on my teenage heart strings with bands like Better Than Ezra, Cowboy Mouth and Tonic. This year they are doing the same by bringing in Eve 6, although I don’t love their hits the same as those previous three bands.

This year Crawfish Festival has some light competition from the Olympia community in the form of an awesome line up with some of the best indie rock bands from South Carolina and the midlands.

Headlining the festival will be All Get Out who are getting their fans hyped about their new album coming out this summer. They have songs that all of the parents and kids will be able to relate to, like family issues, debt and life on the road. Whenever All Get Out’s new album does come out, it will be one of the best albums to ever come out on Favorite Gentlemen and will be one of the finest albums of the year. They are ready to show it to the world and we’ve been waiting for it for two years.

Opening the show will be Ye Mighty! who is just as mighty live as their name might make them sound. I got to check them out for the first time last week and they are definitely one of the best bands in Columbia. They play an emotional brand of heavy alternative rock led by the soaring vocals of Beth Dickerson.

So, come early and often and hear all of the bands.

Ye Mighty! – 11:15 – 11:45
