Watch Jacob Wick Live at Papa Jazz

What’s the first album you remember loving as a kid?

it was a Wynton Marsalis CD, standard time volume something, the one with like two versions of “Cherokee.” I had just started playing trumpet and I think my mom or my aunt bought it for me and I listened to it all the time

What as the first album you bought with your own money?

I have no idea honestly. I remember getting one of those BMG membership things when I was like 13 or 15 and loading up on count Basie and Duke Ellington though.

What was the first local band that caught your ear?

Bobby Lewis. He is a flugelhorn player in Chicago. I would see him with my parents sometimes. Really nice player, like very subtle. I hope he isn’t dead.

What’s the most recent album you bought or have been listening to lately?

uhhh I’ve been listening to a lot of lil Peep and Arca, “come over when you’re sober part 1” and “Arca,” respectively. I like lil Peep for the same reason I like outlaw country, like all the songs are about feeling bad and fucking up rather than some bullshit aspirational material. I love the production on “Arca” and that it’s like undanceable dance music. Also I saw him in a restaurant once in Mexico City and he is like, really hot.

Any new projects on the horizon?

I’m excited for the eventual release of a solo LP, “Feel,” on Thin Wrist out of LA. And looking forward to a spring tour with Ben Bennett and Michael Foster…
